Performance Max Beckmann 6 april to 2 november 2007
On the Friday evenings between April 6 and August 19 2007, the Veenfabriek was a guest at the Van Gogh Museum. During the exhibition 'Max Beckmann in Amsterdam, 1937-1947' the Veenfabriek gave an exclusive, weekly performance in the exposition room. The performers were inspired by Beckmann's life and by the themes and designs of his works. Besides, visual artist Gerbrand Burger was commissioned by the Veenfabriek to make a video installation which was on view every Friday evening as well.Performance
The theatre, variety shows and circus performers are favourite themes in Max Beckmann's oeuvre. This way he connected to (French) modernism in his own way. The 'masquerades' reveal Beckmann's belief that life is a play in which everybody plays a role. For this project the Veenfabriek has initiated various performances, produced by its regular artistic core, among whom we find the company Touki Delphine, and by producers/visual artists like Boukje Schweigman and Peter Kuit, with whom the Veenfabriek has worked before.
Gerbrand Burger's video installation
For his installation Gerbrand Burger was inspired by Beckmann's recurring image of people appearing to be born from eggs. Beckmann borrowed this image from Helena Blavatsky's Secret Doctrine. In his turn, Burger uses this explosive image in a modern setting, the positive promise culminating in an ominous vision.
